A strong collection of sixteen soulful tracks from some of the best female R&B vocalists of our time. These superb sounding ladies are complimented by the stellar songwriting talent of Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, who wrote and produced the tracks. It's been a while since I saw the movie, but the soundtrack does seem very fitting. This CD skillfully covers the whole spectrum of love songs, from delighted to destitute, and back. Brandy's mentor, Whitney Houston, opens with “Exhale (Shoop Shoop),” a very nice song with plenty of soul. She follows this with another wonderful performance in “Why Does It Hurt So Bad.” Next, Toni Braxton gives a smooth, flowing ballad, “Let It Flow.” Then, Aretha Franklin gives us the deep, sullen slow jam, “It Hurts Like Hell.” “Sittin' Up In My Room” picks the beat back up, ultra-funky. Brandy shows off that sweet voice with her usual grace and elegance. This joint is bangin'! (But what's such a foine lady doin' sittin' up in her room?) This song is magnetic - definitely the gem of the whole CD! The funky beats continue with TLC's “This Is How It Works;” a smooth, alluring track with a thick, hypnotic beat, tight vocals and a lil' rap from Left Eye (rest in peace), who shows off her mic skillz. You know TLC! Mary J. Blige mellows it down with a soulful song about being forsaken by an ungratious man: “Not Gon' Cry;” in which she demonstrates very good vocal skills. This is followed by another slow jam, “My Funny Valentine,” by Chaka Khan; who also gives a very strong vocal performance. Next is a soft but upbeat track by Sonja Marie, “And I Gave My Love To You.” The happiness is continued by SWV, with “All Night Long,” in their usual clean, harmonious vocal style. Chanté Moore gives us “Wey U,” a very effective soft groove with a distinct atmospheric quality. Patti LaBelle then gives a dynamic and very skilled performance in “My Love, Sweet Love.” Then, Faith Evans smooths it out with her melodious and joyous love song, “Kissing You.” Guys, please listen to the group For Real; take their advice in “Love Will Be Waiting At Home.” This is a very nice track, and rings very true. The next track is the flip side; Shanna delivers very genuine, emotional, and skilled vocals in “How Could You Call Her Baby.” Whitney Houston closes the album along with Cece Winans, with a beautiful song about friendship: “Count On Me.” Both ladies give a very powerful and moving performance. From beginning to end, this is a beautiful CD that will continue to please, time and again. A definite must-buy! |
