I Still Know What You Did Last Summer

Brandy stars (along with Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Mekhi Phifer, Muse Watson, Bill Cobbs, and Matthew Settle) in this non-stop slash action thriller which picks up some time after I Know What You Did Last Summer killed off most of its cast.

Ben Willis (Muse Watson), roadkill-turned-murderer, isn't about to let Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) off the ‘hook.’  He proceeds to kill just about everyone in the credits - as would be expected of a teen horror flick, - but there are some interesting plot twists along the way.  (I won't give up the whole story, so that's all you get in terms of plot.)

As with the original film, the killings are executed abruptly and without the slightest hesitation or warning.  The killer is bent on slashing Julie, and anyone else who happens to get in the way gets done-in with total indifference.

Brandy comes on the scene as Julie's new best friend, Karla Wilson.  In her first major big-screen role, Brandy gives an exellent performance.  She was surprisingly good at acting terrified.  That, however, wasn't the only acting involved.  Karla is quite a bit more bad-girl than we had seen out of Brandy thus far - while still being believable, and not overdone in the slightest.

As usual, Brandy is radiantly beautiful!  Well, at least until she finds herself mere feet ahead of Ben's hook, where she remains for longer than most of the other characters.  (There's a reason for that, but I can't tell you without spoiling it.)

Everything is down just right in this movie.  The script is more than just a plan for a vicious killing spree; it and the actors both worked well in making the characters very lifelike.  They even managed to throw in a few good laughs.  The cinematography and effects were well done, and the music was fitting.

The element of suspense was perfectly built by a clever combination of foreshadowing and false-scares.  The opening was particularly clever (if not somewhat predictable, if you know how writers think).  The plot is involving, and the end begged for a sequel.

The DVD throws in a few little extras, including movie trailers from both this and the original film, a nice “making of” featurette, and a music video from Jennifer Love Hewitt.

This is a double-sided DVD, with the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio on one side, and pan-and-scan on the other side to fit standard televisions.  As is always the case with all wide-screen films, the original wide-screen version is highly recommended over the “reformatted for TV” version, which tends to destroy the directors' original intentions with respect to composition.  See Widescreen-O-Rama for an excellent article on the differences.

This film is an all-around high-calibre production which does more-than good justice to the original I Know.. film.  It's definitely a must-see for anyone who loves Brandy or any of her co-stars, anyone who'se seen I Know What You Did Last Summer, or anyone else who wants a good thrill.

If you haven't seen the original I Know.. film, I'd recommend seeing it first, as it sets the stage for this one, and is also a great movie in of itself.

As they say, one great thing deserves another!  I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is definitely that.

NOTE: The clips shown above have been squeezed into the 4:3 format for effect, as this is how they appear on the movie film (“print”) itself.  This is not how the film appears on the screen - it will be expanded back to the widescreen format.  These and many, many more captures are shown at their correct aspect ratio in the capture gallery.
