Brandy shows off her sweet voice and talent for singing in this wonderful debut album. I still listen to it all the time! Brandy delivers beautiful, soft, pure
vocals over some very funky beats. Many years later it's still ‘tha bomb!!’ A mere fifteen years old when she recorded it, Brandy was already singing amazingly,
while still reflecting youthful innocence.
Although not quite as refined as Brandy's second album, Never Say Never, this album is a very fine work! It's more lighthearted than her later albums, so it's just the thing when that's the mood you're in. I'm more likely to listen to this album when doing work, whereas I find I can't do that as much with her later albums because they can get really deep. Opening with “Movin' On,” Brandy proclaims her self-confident attitude on life, over a phat beat that throws down a mad bassline right from the first note. Next, in the massive hit, “Baby,” Brandy sings her heart out for one foine boy. In classic Brandy sweetness, she dedicates the next track, “Best Friend,” to her brother Ray-J. Then, you'll be treated to the lovely slow-jam that made the world stop and listen: “I Wanna Be Down.” Brandy weaves a theme of dedication through the whole album; paying tribute to those who encouraged her singing career, including Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and of course her father, mother, and brother! Her heartfelt thanks add a nice touch to an already beautiful work. The smooth, sweet R&B continues with “Brokenhearted” and “I'm Yours,” both really nice slow grooves. “Sunny Day” picks the beat back up with a really good question. “As Long As You're Here” and “Always On My Mind” are nice love songs in which Brandy demonstrates her sweet voice and knack for using it. “Love Is On My Side” and “Give Me You” close the album on a positive note. If you don't already have it, you absolutely must get the album that made the world stand up and take notice of this incredibly talented singer! |
